Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Strategies

Support to Somalia’s National Action Plan on AMR through stewardship, surveillance, policy, and community awareness.

Overview

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a growing global health crisis that threatens the effectiveness of life-saving medicines and the future of healthcare. In Somalia, fragile health systems, over-the-counter antibiotic access, and poor infection control practices accelerate the spread of resistant pathogens. AIDA Health Advisory Group supports Somalia’s National Action Plan on AMR (NAP-AMR) by delivering targeted strategies to reduce the burden of resistance, strengthen health security, and protect patient safety.Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Strategies

Our Approach

We integrate AMR strategies into hospital systems, community health programs, and policy frameworks. By combining Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) with antimicrobial stewardship and awareness campaigns, we empower healthcare facilities and decision-makers to take evidence-based action against resistance.

Policy & Governance

Technical support to the Ministry of Health in implementing Somalia’s NAP-AMR and aligning with WHO Global Action Plan and GLASS.

Antimicrobial Stewardship

Development of hospital-based stewardship programs; training clinicians and pharmacists on rational prescription and antibiotic use.

Surveillance & Laboratory Strengthening

Building lab capacity to detect resistant pathogens; establishing reliable data systems for AMR monitoring and reporting.

Healthcare Workforce Capacity

Training IPC and clinical teams on AMR risks and best practices; mentorship for pharmacists, microbiologists, and infection control staff.

Community Engagement

Public awareness campaigns to reduce misuse of antibiotics; outreach on safe medicine practices and infection prevention.

Monitoring & Evaluation

Tools and frameworks to assess AMR program effectiveness; data-driven recommendations for continuous improvement.

Impact

Through AMR strategies, AIDA helps safeguard essential medicines, reduce preventable infections, and ensure hospitals and communities in Somalia are resilient against the rising threat of resistance. By partnering with government, donors, and healthcare institutions, we drive sustainable solutions to protect public health now and for future generations.
